Wrapping

Hand-knitted wrap to encase fragments of wax candle I gathered from my close friend's memorial. This piece is part of a research I did on wrapping in relation to archives and memories.

The project follows a reoccurring theme questioning the reasons we collect and give sentiment to certain objects. How building something around these precious objects can either protect, immortalise or give new structure to these material memories.

Photographs from a publication on wrapping made in collaboration with Stella Oort. Together, we investigated the idea of wrapping in relation to material objects but also nature, food and the female body.

The publication was inspired by 'The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction' (1986) written by Ursula K. Leguin. Stella and I spent an afternoon sharing and comparing our personal relationship with wrapping. For example our beloved grandmothers and the care they put into wrapping every small offering they gave us upon each of our visits.
